Maha Shivratri 2023: Maha Shivratri is a Hindu festival celebrated in honor of Lord Shiva, one of the deities of Hinduism. It is celebrated on the 13th or 14th day of the Hindu month of Phalguna (February/March). The festival is a time for devotion and celebration for Shiva devotees, and is observed by fasting, chanting mantras, and performing puja rituals.
One such puja vidhi (ritual) that is performed on the day of Maha Shivratri involves the creation of a Shiva lingam using pure water and sandalwood paste. The lingam symbolizes the divine power and energy of Lord Shiva.
Once the lingam has been created, devotees will perform abhishekam, which involves pouring milk, honey, yogurt, and other items over the lingam while reciting prayers and mantras. This ritual is believed to purify the soul and bring blessings from Lord Shiva.
After the abhishekam, aarati is performed, which involves lighting a lamp and waving it before the lingam while singing devotional songs. This symbolizes the removal of ignorance and the offering of light to the deity.
After the aarati, devotees will offer flowers, fruits, and sweets to Lord Shiva as a symbol of love and devotion. They will also perform prostrations before the lingam, expressing their gratitude and devotion to the deity.
As the puja comes to a close, devotees will break their fast and share a meal together, strengthening their bond and celebrating the blessings they have received from Lord Shiva.
Maha Shivratri is not just a time for devotion and celebration, but also a time for self-reflection and spiritual growth. Devotees use the festival as an opportunity to let go of their ego, negative thoughts and actions, and to seek the blessings of Lord Shiva for a happy and prosperous life.
By performing the puja vidhi with devotion and love, devotees can purify their mind and soul and receive the blessings of Lord Shiva. This is the true essence of Maha Shivratri and the reason why it is celebrated with so much reverence and devotion by Shiva devotees all over the world.
